On Tuesday, November 10th, The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation held an event in Washington, D.C. at the Library of Congress to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. During his keynote address, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates addressed the crowd, stating,

“President Reagan understood that erasing the impression of U.S. political and military weakness would ultimately reap diplomatic rewards and strategic breakthroughs. He embraced the importance of military strength, and of speaking blunt truths about the Soviet system and Soviet behavior.”

Tearing Down the Berlin Wall-
Monday, November 9, 2009

November 9, 2009 marked the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. In commemoration of this historic event, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library invited students and visitors to paint their inspirational messages on its thirty-two foot replica of the Berlin Wall over a three week-period. On November 9th, a group of fifth grade students from Wood Ranch Elementary School participated in a ceremony to tear down the wall. The program included remarks by First Lt. Amy Treese who in 1978, escorted Governor Reagan through Checkpoint Charlie during his first trip to Berlin.
